Understanding the Ratings Table

The tables which show the ratings are designed to give an accurate and complete picture of how each judged fared in the user ratings. In each ratings category, the table displays the number of users who gave the judge each score.

Example:

Competencey Scores
  Poor Fair Average Good Excellent
Objectivity: 1 3 4 4 4
General Knowledge: 0 0 4 7 5
Knowledge Of Breed: 0 1 5 6 4
Ring Manners: 1 2 1 5 7
Ring Procedures: 1 0 2 5 7
OVERALL:

In this example, in the General Knowledge category, 1 users gave this judge a Poor rating, 3 users gave this judge a Fair rating, 4 users gave this judge an Average rating, 4 gave this judge a Good rating, and 4 gave this judge and Excellent rating.

Understanding the Computed Average

The average score of a judge in any category is calculated using a simple average formula. When users score a judge, a Poor rating in each category is given the value of 1, a Fair rating is given the value of 2, and so on up to the Excellent rating, which is given a value of 5. These score values are simply added together, and then divided by the total number of times the judge has been scored.

Understanding Average Grade

Once a raw average score has been obtained in a category, it is re-assigned a grade of Poor, Fair, Average, Good or Excellent. In order to more fairly and accurately apply this grade, the following scale is used:

  • 1.0 - 1.8 = Poor
  • 1.8 - 2.6 = Fair
  • 2.6 - 3.4 = Average
  • 3.4 - 4.2 = Good
  • 4.2 - 5.0 = Excellent

If a "normal" scale were used (1-2 = Poor, 2-3 = Fair, 3-4 = Average, 4-5 = Good, 5 = Excellent), obviously a judge would have to be rated Excellent by every single user to obtain an average rating of Excellent.

Understanding the Overall Score

The Overall Score is obtained using a similar method as described above, but weighing some categories more than others. Ring Manners, though important, is not as indicative of a judge's ability as is General Knowledge. The weighting, based on percentages, is shown below:

  • Objectivity = 30 percent
  • General Knowledge = 25 percent
  • Breed Knowledge = 25 percent
  • Ring Manners = 10 percent
  • Ring Procedures = 10 percent
